Visiting and membership

UNSW Library is open to current UNSW students & staff and UNSW Library members (UNSW alumni, NIDA staff & students, ULANZ and community borrowers). UNSW Library is not open for any other visits. Further relaxation of restrictions will follow as part of UNSW Sydney’s phased, gradual return to campus.

New Library membership registrations are currently unavailable.

Visiting the Library

Visit UNSW Library during regular Library opening hours. You can plan your visit using public transport or limited paid parking is available on campus.

To make photocopies or scan, photocopy cards can be purchased from the Print/Copy Services desk Level 2 Main Library.

Visiting academics and university students registered with eduroam from your home institution, may access the eduroam Wi-Fi network while on campus without becoming a Library member.

University visitors may use your personal device to access the UNSW guest Wi-Fi service.

A valid membership is required to:

  • access Library computers
  • borrow items
  • access online resources
    • some resources are only available to current UNSW staff and students
    • some memberships can access online resources only when using the Library desktop computers (no remote or home access)

UNSW conjoint staff

To access the Library, UNSW conjoint staff will need to:

Become a UNSW Library member

If you are not a current UNSW staff or currently enrolled student, you can apply to become a Library member.

Memberships are processed Monday to Friday, 9am and 4pm, excluding public holidays. The Library aims to process memberships within 3 business days. You will receive an email when your Library membership card is ready for collection. Collect your card from the Help Zone, Main Library. Please bring current valid photo ID for sighting by Library staff.

To apply, you will need to complete an online Library membership form and provide relevant documentation.

 

UNSW affiliated staff and visiting academics

Required documents

  • photo ID
  • proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill, etc.)
  • a letter signed by your faculty or department on letterhead stating:
    • your name
    • in what capacity you are working or researching
    • length of time you are working with the faculty or department
    • a statement of indemnity

A statement of indemnity may be worded as follows:

"The Faculty or Department of ----- agrees to indemnify UNSW Library against all losses, costs and expenses incurred by reason of the member named above failing to observe the rules and conditions of membership of the Library".

Expiry date

One year from the date of your application or on the termination date of your employment (if less than one year).

Access to resources

affiliated
UNSW alumni

UNSW students who have graduated or have completed their program and are eligible for graduation may apply for Library alumni membership.

Note: The Alumni and External Engagement Office offers remote access to a limited number of databases for UNSW Alumni. Library membership is not required for this free service.

Required documents

  • photo ID
  • proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill, etc.)
  • proof of your alumni status (one of the following):
    • any academic record demonstrating you are a UNSW graduate
    • email confirmation from the alumni team verifying that you are a UNSW graduate

Fees

No fees apply.

Expiry date

New and renewing Alumni memberships submitted from the 1st of May 2019, will now be valid for 3 years from the date of application.

Borrowers from other universities (ULANZ)

Your university must be an eligible Universities Libraries Australia & New Zealand (ULANZ) member.

  • photo ID

  • proof of current enrolment/employment from your university e.g. letter of enrolment/employment

Fees

  • staff - no fees apply
  • students - $50.00 per annum (plus GST)

Expiry date

Your card expiry date is 31 March.

Access to resources

Community borrowers (including retired UNSW staff and students from UNSW Institute of Languages)

Fees

  • community members - $180.00 per annum (plus GST)
  • retired UNSW staff (10 years or more service - a letter can be obtained from HR) - $90.00 per annum (plus GST)

Expiry date

Your card expiry date is one year from the date of your application.

Schools Partnership Program

Teachers, Year 11 and Year 12 students are eligible to join. High schools must be signatories to the Schools Partnership Program. Schools wishing to join should contact the Library.

Required documents

  • completed application form, available from your school (signed by the student, a parent or guardian, and a school representative)
  • photo ID

Fees

  • students - $35.00 per annum (plus GST)
  • teachers - $70.00 per annum (plus GST)

Expiry date

Your card expiry date is 30 September.
