Interlibrary loans

Interlibrary loans (ILL) are available to all current UNSW staff and students. For more information see Borrowing rights

What we do

  • Obtain items not held in the UNSW Library and Canberra Academy Library collections
  • Supply copy requests from the UNSW Library’s physical collection to off-campus patrons

Requesting an interlibrary loan

Before submitting your request, check that the item is not held in the UNSW Library collection.

  • Log into myLibrary and request an interlibrary loan via the ILL request tab
  • Journal articles can also be requested via Find it, if the option is available
  • If print copy is preferred, please note on the ILL request

Requests that may be difficult to obtain include:

  • rare books
  • reference materials
  • whole issues or volumes of journals
  • materials in heavy demand
  • very recent publications
  • items not yet published in print

Turnaround times

  • Requests will usually be supplied within 3  to 10 working days
  • Urgent materials can be requested using the rush and express service levels (see costs section below)
    • Rush - request made with lending library within 1 business day
    • Express - request made with lending library within 2 business hours
  • Overseas material will take longer to obtain


  • Core service level requests incur no charge
  • Rush ($16.50 - $33) and Express ($33 - $66) service level requests incur additional costs
  • The amount charged will be added to your Library account

Notification and delivery

  • A confirmation email will be sent including your request number
  • You will be notified via email when a loan item has arrived
  • Digital copies will be supplied via email, subject to licence conditions

Viewing the status of your interlibrary loan request

  • Log into myLibrary, click ILL Request
  • Click List Open Requests to view all active requests or click List All Requests to view past and present requests

Loan periods

Loan periods vary depending on the lending policies of the supplying library.

Renewing an interlibrary loan

Contact us at least two business days before a loan is due (see contact details below).

Returning an interlibrary loan

  • ILLs can be returned via any UNSW Library return chute, or by post
  • Please ensure the plastic ILL strap is attached to the loan when it is returned to ensure loan is discharged correctly
  • Late returns will be subject to fines
