Join the Library
If you are not a student or staff member of UNSW you can apply for a Library card at the Help Zone, Main Library.
Cards are made between 9am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. Your card will be ready in one hour. If you apply in the evening or on a weekend, your card will be ready after 10am on the next business day. Bring the required documentation and pay the applicable fees at the Help Zone.
UNSW affiliated staff, visiting fellow, honorary fellow
Required documents
- photo ID
- proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill, etc.)
- a completed library membership application form, available from the Help Zone, Main Library.
(If you are based off campus please contact your Outreach Librarian) - a letter signed by your faculty or department on letterhead stating:
- your name
- in what capacity you are working or researching
- length of time you are working with the faculty or department
- a statement of indemnity
A statement of indemnity may be worded as follows:
"The Faculty or Department of ----- agrees to indemnify UNSW Library against all losses, costs and expenses incurred by reason of the member named above failing to observe the rules and conditions of membership of the Library".

Expiry date
One year from the date of your application or on the termination date of your employment (if less than one year).
NIDA staff and students
Required documents
- photo ID
- proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill, etc.)
- NIDA ID card
Fees
No fees apply.
Expiry date
Your card expiry date is 30 March.
Document Delivery Service
Supply loans, copies and theses to other libraries via Document Delivery Service.
Borrowers from other universities (ULA)
Required documents
- photo ID
- proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill, etc.)
- proof of current enrolment/employment from your university e.g. letter of enrolment/employment
Your university must be an eligible Universities Australia member.
Fees
- staff - no fees apply
- students - $50.00 per annum (GST inclusive)
Expiry date
Your card expiry date is 28 February.
Schools Partnership Program
Required documents
- completed application form, available from your school (signed by the student, a parent or guardian, and a school representative)
- photo ID
Teachers, Year 11 and Year 12 students are eligible to join. High schools must be signatories to the Schools Partnership Program. Schools wishing to join should contact the Library.
Fees
- students - $35.00 per annum (GST inclusive)
- teachers - $70.00 per annum (GST inclusive)
Expiry date
Your card expiry date is 30 September.
Alumni
Required documents
- photo ID
- proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill, etc.)
- proof of your alumni status (one of the following):
- any academic record demonstrating you are a UNSW graduate
- a letter from the Alumni Relations Office verifying that you are a UNSW graduate
Contact the Alumni Relations Office to request that a letter be faxed to the Main Library. The letter will then be available when you come to the Help Zone with your other documents.

$90.00 per annum (GST inclusive)
Expiry date
Your card expiry date is one year from the date of your application.
Community borrowers (including retired UNSW staff)
Required documents
- photo ID
- proof of address (either on your photo ID or on a phone bill etc.)
Fees
- community members - $180.00 per annum (GST inclusive)
- retired UNSW staff (10 years or more service) - $90.00 per annum (GST inclusive)
Expiry date
Your card expiry date is one year from the date of your application.
