Fines and penalties

How do I avoid fines & penalties?

  • return borrowed items by the due date
    Ensure that items on loan to you are returned to the Library before travelling away from Sydney.
  • review myLibrary regularly

Use myLibrary to:

- check when your loans are due
- renew loans before they become overdue
- check if any loans have been recalled

  • keep your due date receipt as a reminder
  • keep your contact details up-to-date
  • check your email for Library notifications
    These are sent to your official UNSW email address (staff & students) or the email address specified on your application form (non-UNSW users).

Note: Reminder emails are sent as a courtesy only and are not a substitute for checking myLibrary regularly.

How are fines & penalties calculated?

Standard item

Loss of borrowing privileges until the item is returned.
Borrowing privileges are restored when overdue items are returned. Please note that if you return overdue items outside of staffed library hours, you may not be able to borrow again until the next working day.
Staff and postgraduate student loans of 6 months must be brought to the Help Zone for sighting and re-issue.

Recalled item

$2.00 per day
Due date will change if the item has been recalled by another borrower.
You cannot renew these items.

High Use Collection & Multimedia collection item

$3.00 per hour or part there of
Loss of borrowing privileges until the item is returned.

Interlibrary Loan item

$1.00 per day
Borrowing privileges are restored when overdue items are returned. Please note that if you return overdue items outside of staffed library hours, you may not be able to borrow again until the next working day.

Lost item replacement

$155.00 replacement fee
When an item becomes 30 days overdue a fee of $155.00 to replace a lost item will be charged unless the item is returned.

This fee consists of $120.00 replacement fee, and $35.00 administration fee. If the item is returned, the replacement fee of $120 will be withdrawn, but the administration fee of $35.00 remains payable. An item is deemed lost when it is 30 days overdue.

If an item is replaced within two weeks of paying the lost item replacement costs, the replacement fee will be refunded but not the administration fee. Any accrued fines on high use items will remain payable.

Lost peripheral items (e.g. VGA cables) have a replacement fee of $65.00, consisting of $30.00 replacement cost and $35.00 administration fee. If the item is returned, the $30 replacement fee will be withdrawn, but the administration fee of $35.00 remains payable. A peripheral item is deemed lost if not returned on the day of borrowing.

How do I pay fines?

- credit card (Bankcard, MasterCard, Visa)
