| How
do I get a copy of EndNote? |
|
EndNote
software is available to UNSW staff and postgraduate students
from the Division of Information Services, Software Distribution.
For more information on how to order your copy, go to the
website:
(click on View Software Index, then the EndNote
link).

|
|
| How
much does EndNote cost? |
| Licences
purchased from the Division of Information Services (DIS) are
$150 ($165 inc. GST). |
|
|
| What
is an EndNote library? |
| An
EndNote library is a database that stores your references. These
references can link to your word processing documents to create
in-text citations and bibliographies. EndNote libraries have
a file extension of .enl. In order to begin using EndNote,
you will need to create a library, or open an existing library.
|
|
|
| How
do I transfer references saved from database searches into EndNote,
without retyping them? |
| References
saved from database searches can be imported into your
EndNote library, using the appropriate filter file. The filter
will transfer the data from your saved searches correctly into
your library. You will need to use the filter that matches the
database name and provider from which you saved the references
(eg. Medline - OVID). This is very important. To learn how to
use filters, go to . |
|
|
| How
do I transfer references from one EndNote library into another?
|
|
If
you would like to transfer the entire list of references from
an EndNote library into another library, you will need to
import it using the EndNote filter:
|
1.
|
Open
the library in which you wish to import your references. |
|
2.
|
Click
on File > Import... An Import
window will appear. |
|
3.
|
Click
on Choose File... and select the EndNote library
from which you wish to transfer the references
(see figure below). |
|
4.
|
Next
to Import Option, select EndNote Library
(if not already selected). |
|
5.
|
Choose
your preferences for duplicates. |
|
6.
|
Leave
the Text Translation on No Translation. |
|
7.
|
Click
on Import. |
|
8.
|
EndNote
will display the recently imported references. To see
all your references, click on References >
Show All. |
| |
|
| |
 |
If
you wish to select specific references from one library to
transfer into another library, you can simply copy and paste.
To do this:
|
1.
|
Select
your references by clicking on it. To select a range of
references, click on the first one and while holding down
the Shift key, click on the last reference in the
range. To select multiple references which are not next
to each other, press the Ctrl key and click on
individual references. |
|
2.
|
Once
you have selected your reference(s), click on Edit
> Copy. |
|
3.
|
Open
to the library that you wish to add your references to. |
|
4.
|
Click
on Edit > Paste. |
|
|
|
| How
do I transfer references from my files saved in other citation
managers (eg. Procite and Reference Manager) into EndNote? |
|
You
can transfer references saved in other citation managers using
the import feature with the appropriate filter file (as outlined
above).
|
1.
|
Open
the library in which you wish to import your references. |
|
2.
|
Click
on File > Import... An Import
window will appear. |
|
3.
|
Click
on Choose File... and select the EndNote library
from which you wish to transfer the references. |
|
4.
|
Next
to Import Option, select your
filter (ie. the one that matches your citation
manager eg. Procite). |
|
5.
|
Choose
your preferences for duplicates. |
|
6.
|
Leave
the Text Translation on No Translation. |
|
7.
|
Click
on Import. |
|
8.
|
EndNote
will display the recently imported references. To see
all your references, click on References >
Show All. |
|
|
|
| What
is a filter file? |
| Information
saved from different databases appear in different formats (see
figure below). Hence you will need to use the appropriate
filter file in order to import the data correctly into your
EndNote library. To choose the correct filter, you will need
the name and provider of the database from which you saved your
results (eg. Current Contents - OVID). The filters will instruct
EndNote to sort the information from the saved file into the
appropriate fields eg. Authors into the Author field,
Titles into the Title field, etc.. |
| |
How
filter files work
 |
|
|
| What
is importing? |
| Importing
involves the transfer of references from another file into your
EndNote library using filters. This saves you time so that you
don't have to manually enter each reference. For more information,
go to . |
|
|
| How
do I get other filters for importing my references? eg. APAIS
filter is not supplied with EndNote 5. |
|
If
the filter that you require is not available, you can download
them from other sites. Filters for the majority of Australian
databases (eg. APAIS) are not included with the standard
installation of EndNote 5. Follow the instructions below to
copy existing filters to your list. If the following sites
do not have the filter that you require, please feel free
to
library staff.
|
|
Open
the website with the additional filter file(s). |
|
|
Right-click
on the filter file (these files have an extension of .enf). |
|
|
Click
on Save Target As... |
|
|
Enter
a file name (its best to call it the name of the database
and provider eg. Medline_Ovid.enf). |
|
|
Select
the Filter folder to save the file to (with the
standard installation of EndNote, this should be C:\Program
Files\EndNote\Filters\). |
|
|
Click
on Save. |

|
|
| What
is a connnection file? |
| Connection
files allow you to connect directly to a database through EndNote
and save the results into your EndNote library. While this may
sound convenient, the search interface provided by EndNote is
heavily simplified, and advanced features such as Subject
Headings and Thesaurus available in the databases
cannot be accessed through EndNote connection files. |
|
|
| How
do I use connection files to connect to a library database? |
| If
you choose to use connection files, you can connect to some
of the library databases (eg. OVID databases) using the following
procedure:
1.
Open Endnote
2. Click on File and then Connect...
3. Select the database that you wish to connect to.
4. Click on "OK" when prompted for a login and password
(only if you are on campus or using the UDUS account
from home).
The
alternative method to using connection files is to perform
your search in the database in the usual manner, and then
use filters to import the data.

|
| The
EndNote Add-Ins (options) are not available in my Word programme,
even when EndNote is installed on my PC. |
| You
will need to install EndNote after the installation of
Word for the EndNote Add-Ins to appear. |
|
