3.1 Inserting In-Text Citations in Word Documents
Once you have created an EndNote library containing your references, you can insert them into Word documents. This guide assumes that you use Microsoft Word 97, 2000 or XP. Please refer to the EndNote manual for more information about using other word processing software. EndNote must be installed after MS Word for the EndNote options to be available to format your bibliography.

Open your EndNote library.
- Click on the citation that you wish to insert.
Open your Word document.
  - Place the cursor where you wish to insert your in-text citation.
  - Click on Tools > EndNote 6 > Insert Selected Citation(s) (Figure 19).
  - EndNote will insert your in-text citation as well as generate a bibliography at the end of the document.

Some publication styles may require the use of footnotes in addition to bibliographies. This section will show you how to insert footnotes into your Word document, using references from your EndNote library. For more information on how to format the footnotes, refer to the EndNote manual (click on Start > Programs > EndNote > EndNote Manual).
  3.3 Inserting Footnotes

Open your EndNote library.

-
Click on the reference that you wish to insert into your Word document.
Go to your Word document.
Place the cursor where you wish to insert your footnote.
Click on Insert > Footnote… (Figure 22).
In the "Footnote and Endnote" window, click on OK (Figure 23). Word will insert a superscript number where you last placed your cursor, as well as a corresponding footnote number at the bottom of the page.

You can modify the footnote format by editing it in EndNote. To do this, go to EndNote and click on Edit > Output Styles > Open Style Manager.
Click on the required style (eg. "APA 5th"), and then click on Edit.
Click on Templates under Footnotes on the left hand side. This will bring up a list of options for this style (Figure 28).
On the right hand side, next to Format citations in footnotes, select your options in the drop-down menu (ie. Same as "Bibliography", "Same as In-Text Citations", or "With Footnote Format").
