1.1 What is an EndNote Library
An EndNote library is a database that stores your references. Any kind of references can be included in an EndNote library. One record containing many different fields is created for each reference. To make it easy to manually add new references, templates are available for a wide range of reference types, eg. journal articles, book sections, conference proceedings, bills, statutes, and even personal communications. Once a record is created, information about selected references can be inserted into a Word document to create in-text citations and bibliographies. EndNote libraries have a file extension of .enl. To begin using EndNote, you will need to create a library, or open an existing library.

  1.2 Starting EndNote
To begin using EndNote, click on the Start menu, then Programs > EndNote > EndNote Program (Figure 1).

- To insert new textboxes at the bottom of the search window click on the Add button.
- Ensure that you select the appropriate Boolean Operator (ie. AND, OR, or NOT).
